Entry Requirements

Candidates should –
(a) have at least nine years of working experience in position which provides domestic or banquet service, or serves guests or customers in a large household or establishment;
(b) have at least five years of working experience in a supervisory role and be able to supervise a large number of domestic staff;
(c) be able to speak fluent Cantonese, simple English and Putonghua; and able to read and write Chinese and simple English;
(d) have good interpersonal and communication skills;
(e) preferably have basic knowledge in application of common computer software; and
(f) preferably have butler-related qualification.


The Contract Chief Steward in the Chief Secretary for Administration’s Official Residence (the Residence) is mainly deployed on –
(a) monitoring the daily operation of the Residence;
(b) managing and supervising the work of domestic staff in the Residence;
(c) managing and performing domestic work in the Residence, including cleaning (e.g. the premises, furnishings, household items and wares, etc.), tidying-up places, preparing for banquets, serving guests in receptions, simple laundry, etc.;
(d) serving food and drinks in banquets and undertaking work in relation to events and functions held in and outside the Residence;
(e) arranging maintenance, stock-taking, repairing and replacement of household items and furnishings; and
(f) performing other domestic related duties in and outside the Residence.

(Note: The Contract Chief Steward in the Residence is required to wear uniform and to work irregular hours including evenings, weekends and public holidays. He/She may also be required to work overtime and stay overnight in the Residence on need basis.)

Terms of Appointment

Successful candidates will be appointed on non-civil service contract terms for a period of two years.

Salary and Fringe Benefits

$31,750 per month
(a) A gratuity may be granted upon satisfactory completion of the full contract period with consistently high standard of performance. The amount of gratuity payable will be the sum which, when added to the Government’s contribution to a Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme as required by the MPF Schemes Ordinance, equals 10% of the total basic salary drawn during the contract period.
(b) The benefits in respect of rest days, statutory holidays, general holidays, annual leave, maternity leave or paternity leave, sickness allowance, where appropriate, will be granted in accordance with the provisions of the Employment Ordinance and confirmed at the time of the offer of appointment.

General Notes

(1) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.

Application forms [G.F. 340 (Rev. 3/2013)] are obtainable from any Home Affairs Enquiry Centres of District Offices, Home Affairs Department or any Job Centres of the Employment Services Division, Labour Department. The said form can also be downloaded from the Civil Service Bureau's Internet website ( Applications together with a full curriculum vitae and copies of relevant documents (as specified below) should be submitted via one of the following means:

(a) by post to the Personnel Office, Departmental Administration Unit, Administration Wing, Room 2561, 25/F, Central Government Offices, 2 Tim Mei Avenue, Tamar, Hong Kong, with the envelope clearly marked “Application for the position of Contract Chief Steward” (the postmark date on the envelope will be regarded as the date of submission of application). To avoid delayed or unsuccessful delivery of applications by post, please ensure that the correct address is clearly printed or written on the envelope and sufficient postage has been affixed before posting. Mail items bearing insufficient postage will not be delivered to this Office and will be returned to the sender or disposed of by the Hongkong Post, where appropriate. Applicants will bear any consequences arising from paying insufficient postage;

(b) by hand to the application drop-in box of Administration Wing located at the Staff Entrance, 2/F., East Wing, Central Government Offices, 2 Tim Mei Avenue, Tamar, Hong Kong, with the envelope clearly marked “Application for the position of Contract Chief Steward”. The drop-in box is available from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday (except public holidays) and up till 5:00 p.m. on the closing date of application; or

(c) through on-line facilities on the Civil Service Bureau homepage at Candidates who applied online should submit copies of supporting documents not later than one week after the close of application to the contact address and the online application number should be quoted on the envelope and the copies of all supporting documents.

Applications which are incomplete, late or submitted by fax or email, or not made in the prescribed form, or without required documents will not be considered.

Candidates who are selected for interview will normally receive an invitation in about eight weeks from the closing date of application.
