Entry Requirements

Candidates should have -
(a) a Higher Diploma in Statistics, Applied Mathematics or Statistical Computing from a Hong Kong university or institute, or equivalent, for which at least one-third of the credit units should be related to descriptive statistics and statistical inference (Note 1);
(b) met the language proficiency requirements of Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent (Note 2); and
(c) at least two years of full-time post-qualification work experience, preferably in the area of statistical analysis, statistical computation, conducting surveys, epidemiological research or disease surveillance control (Note 3).

Other Requirements:
Candidates should also preferably have knowledge in -
(a) statistical software (e.g. Statistics Analysis System (SAS), Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS));
(b) statistical models (e.g. control chart, exponentially weighted-moving average, hierarchical linear modelling);
(c) biomedical statistics (e.g. cross-sectional studies, case-control studies); and
(d) survey methods (e.g. sampling methods, data analysis).
(1) Overseas qualifications will be subject to academic assessment.
(2) "Grade C" and "Grade E" in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to "Level 3" and "Level 2" respectively in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth.
(3) Candidates should submit copies of (a) academic transcripts; (b) graduation certificates; and (c) supporting documents of relevant work experience.


A Research Assistant is mainly deployed on –
(a) performing COVID-19 related duties, including data matching, database updating, compiling returns and reports, etc.;
(b) conducting surveys;
(c) data entry and conducting computations to provide statistical outputs;
(d) preparing simple computer programmes and applying computer packages in statistical work;
(e) compiling and drawing statistical tables and charts;
(f) assisting in analysis of statistical data; and
(g) providing other clerical support.

(Remarks: Candidates may be required to :
(1) perform shift duties or work irregular hours to provide 24-hour coverage, work on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays;
(2) perform duties at boundary control points, Temporary Specimen Collection Centre at the Hong Kong International Airport and quarantine centres; and
(3) attend duties during emergencies.)

Terms of Appointment

Successful candidates will be appointed on non-civil service contract terms up to 12 months. Renewal of contract will be subject to the service need of the Department and the performance of the candidate.

Salary and Fringe Benefits

HK$17,295 per month
Candidates appointed for a contract period of 12 months are eligible for 10 days’ paid annual leave. Otherwise, the paid annual leave entitled will be calculated on a pro-rata basis. Other benefits such as rest days, statutory holidays (or substituted holidays), maternity / paternity leave and sickness allowance, where appropriate, will be granted in line with the Employment Ordinance (Cap. 57).

General Notes

(a) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.

(g) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions / Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications. (h) The period of notification of recruitment examination and / or interview may be longer when a large number of applications are received or when there are other complications requiring a longer processing time for the applications.
