Entry Requirements

Candidates should have –
(a) been registered in Part I of the Register of Optometrists under the Supplementary Medical Professions Ordinance, Chapter 359;
(b) a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Optometrists Board; and
(c) met the language proficiency requirements of “Level 2” or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, or equivalent [See Notes (2)]; and be able to speak fluent Cantonese and English.

(1) Candidates should submit a copy of supporting documents of relevant qualification/work experience.
(2) For civil service appointment purpose, Grade “C” and Grade “E” in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to “Level 3” and “Level 2” respectively in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth.
(3) For the purpose of heightening public awareness of the Basic Law (BL) and promoting a culture of learning of BL in the community, applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their BL knowledge. The BL test result will constitute an appropriate weighting in a candidate’s overall assessment.

An Optometrist is mainly deployed on –
(a) providing evaluation on visual acuity and visual functions, using drugs approved by the Optometrists Board in the course of practice and making referrals for further examination and treatment;
(b) providing optometric care and advice;
(c) working with other professionals in the planning of optometry services and provision of support services;
(d) participating in optometric research and development/setting up of assessment tools, conducting and participating in health promotion activities and health education programme/projects, and giving talks and lectures; and
(e) performing related administrative duties.

(Remarks: May be required to work irregular hours.)

Terms of Appointment

A new recruit will normally be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, he/she may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms.

Salary and Fringe Benefits

Master Pay Scale Point 13 (HK$27,340 per month) to Master Pay Scale Point 23 (HK$44,325 per month).

General Notes

(a) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.

(i) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions/Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications. The application period for the post of Optometrist is from 13 December 2019 (Friday) to 2 January 2020 (Thursday).

Application Forms (G.F. 340 [(Rev. 3/2013)]) are obtainable from any Home Affairs Enquiry Centres of District Offices, Home Affairs Department or any Job Centres of the Employment Services Division, Labour Department. The said form can also be downloaded from the Civil Service Bureau’s website (http://www.csb.gov.hk).

Completed application form, together with copies of academic certificates, transcripts and documentary proof of working experience should reach the enquiry address indicated below on or before the closing date for application. The postmark date on the envelope will be regarded as the date of application. Please clearly mark on the envelope “Application for the post of Optometrist in Department of Health”.

Online application can also be made through the Civil Service Bureau’s website (http://www.csb.gov.hk). Copies of academic certificates, transcripts and documentary proof of working experience should reach the enquiry address indicated below on or before 9 January 2020 (Thursday). Please clearly mark on the envelope “Application for the post of Optometrist in Department of Health”, and quote the online application number on the envelope and every page of the copies of the documents.

Applicants should ensure that the correct address is clearly printed or written on the envelope and sufficient postage is affixed before posting so as to avoid unsuccessful delivery of application. Any underpaid mail items will be returned or disposed of by the Hongkong Post.

Applicants should list in details the relevant academic qualifications as well as working experience in the application form. Please do not send originals of transcripts/certificates.
