Entry Requirements

Candidates should have –
(a) (i) a qualification obtained after three years of formal training in dental therapy, or equivalent, in a recognised institution [See Note (1)]; or
(ii) an Advanced Diploma in Dental Therapy awarded by a recognised Hong Kong institution, or equivalent [See Note (1)]; and
(b) met the language proficiency requirements of Level 2 [See Note (2)] or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent; and
(c) be able to speak fluent Cantonese and English.

(1) Candidates who are expected to meet the requirement in 2020 may also apply.
(2) For civil service appointment purpose, ‘Grade E’ in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the HKCEE before 2007 is accepted administratively as comparable to ‘Level 2’ in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth.
(3) For the purpose of heightening public awareness of the Basic Law (BL) and promoting a culture of learning of BL in the community, applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their BL knowledge. The BL test result will constitute an appropriate weighting in a candidate’s overall assessment.
(4) Applicants should submit copies of relevant documents in support of their (i) qualification in Dental Therapy; and (ii) language proficiency.

A Dental Therapist is mainly deployed on undertaking the following dental work on patients below the age of 18 under the supervision of Dental Officers –
(a) dental examinations and prophylactic treatment including scaling and polishing of teeth, application of fissure sealants, topical fluorides and medicaments;
(b) filling and extraction of teeth using local anaesthetic where necessary;
(c) radiographic examinations of the teeth and supporting structures and the jaws; and
(d) oral health instruction and education in dental health on an individual or group basis.

(1) Required to wear uniform.
(2) May be required to work outside normal working hours.)

Terms of Appointment

A new recruit will normally be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, he/she may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms.

Salary and Fringe Benefits

Master Pay Scale Point 13 ($28,780 per month) to Master Pay Scale Point 23 ($46,655 per month).

General Notes

(a) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.

If a disabled candidate meets the entry requirements, he/she will be invited to attend the selection interview/written examination without being subject to any further shortlisting. (i) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions/Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications. Application Forms [G.F. 340 (Rev. 3/2013)] are obtainable from any Home Affairs Enquiry Centres of District Offices, Home Affairs Department or any Job Centres of the Employment Services Division, Labour Department. The said form can also be downloaded from the Civil Service Bureau’s website (http://www.csb.gov.hk).

Applications, together with the required documents mentioned in Note (4), submitted in person or by post should reach the above contact address on or before the closing date for application (the postmark date on the envelope will be regarded as the date of application). Please specify the title of the post being applied for on the envelope. To avoid delayed or unsuccessful delivery of applications by post, please ensure that the correct address is clearly printed or written on the envelope and sufficient postage has been affixed before posting. Mail items bearing insufficient postage will not be delivered to this Department and will be returned to the sender or disposed of by the Hongkong Post, where appropriate. Candidates who are selected for interview will normally receive an invitation (by email or by post) in about six to eight weeks from the closing date for application. Those who are not invited for interview may assume that their applications are unsuccessful.
