Entry Requirements

Candidates should –
(A)(I) have a Bachelor of Science Honours degree majoring in Physics (General Physics, Medical Physics, Radiation Physics, Health Physics, or Applied Physics) or Engineering (Electronic, Electrical, Computer, Microwave, Biomedical, Telecommunications or Medical Electronics) from a Hong Kong university, or equivalent; and
(i) have two years’ post-graduate relevant experience; or
(ii) have a Master degree majoring in the above mentioned subjects from a Hong Kong university, or equivalent; OR
(II) be corporate members of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Electrical Engineering Division or Electronic Engineering Division) elected on or after 5 December 1975, or equivalent;
(B) have a pass result in the Aptitude Test in the Common Recruitment Examination (“CRE”) (Note 1); and
(C) have met the language proficiency requirements of ‘Level 1’ results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the CRE (Note 1), or equivalent.
Remarks
(1)(a) Candidates’ results in the Aptitude Test (“AT”) paper of the CRE are classified as ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’, while the results of the Use of Chinese (“UC”) and Use of English (“UE”) papers in the CRE are classified as ‘Level 2’, ‘Level 1’ or ‘Fail’, with ‘Level 2’ being the highest.
(b) ‘Level 5’ or above and ‘Level 4’ in Chinese Language of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (“HKDSEE”) are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the UC paper of CRE. ‘Level 5’ or above and ‘Level 4’ in English Language of HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the UE paper of CRE.
(c) Grade ‘C’ or above and Grade ‘D’ in Chinese Language and Culture or Chinese Language and Literature of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (“HKALE”) are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the UC paper of CRE. Grade ‘C’ or above and Grade ‘D’ in Use of English of HKALE or in English Language of the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) (“GCE A Level”) are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the UE paper of CRE.
(d) Candidates with an overall band of 6.5 or above with no subtest score below band 6 obtained in the same sitting in the Academic Module of the International English Language Testing System (“IELTS”) within the two-year validity period of the test are considered as having met the English language proficiency requirement of the Physicist post. The IELTS test result must be valid on any date during the application period, i.e. from 25 October 2019 to 7 November 2019.
(2) For the purpose of heightening public awareness of the Basic Law (“BL”) and promoting a culture of learning of BL in the community, applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their BL knowledge. The BL test result for degree / professional grades will constitute an appropriate weighting in a candidate’s overall assessment.)
 

Duties

A Physicist is mainly deployed on –
(A) enforcement of the Radiation Ordinance, Cap 303, Laws of Hong Kong;
(B) calibration and quality control of radiation or radioactivity measurement instruments;
(C) provision of advice and service relating to radiation protection and medical device safety;
(D) assessment on health effects to workers and the general public relating to the use of radiation;
(E) providing training in Radiation Physics and Medical Physics to radiographers, doctors and nurses;
(F) provision of professional input in public education on radiation protection; and
(G) assisting in the planning for and taking response actions in nuclear emergencies.
(Remarks: May be required to perform on-call duties or work outside normal working hours.)

Terms of Appointment

A new recruit will normally be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, he/ she may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms.

Salary and Fringe Benefits

Master Pay Scale Point 27 ($53,195 per month) to Master Pay Scale Point 44 ($105,175 per month).

General Notes

(A) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.
